Model Overview

The BMW i3 is an all-electric model under the BMW Group banner. The moniker has historically represented two distinct offerings in the brand's portfolio: first, the imported compact EV (code-named i01) marketed globally between 2014 and 2022; and second, the locally assembled pure electric D-segment executive sedan (underpinned by the G20 3 Series long-wheelbase platform) manufactured by BMW Brilliance in China since 2022. The current locally produced BMW i3 initially debuted in March 2022 as BMW Brilliance’s maiden EV sedan. On 23 January 2026, the facelifted 2026 BMW i3 was officially rolled out, retaining a 3-variant lineup with official retail prices ranging from RM278,000 to RM338,000, marking an across-the-board price cut of RM75,900 compared to the outgoing iteration. However, production of the current-generation BMW i3 is slated to officially conclude in August 2026 at the Shenyang Lydia plant. Meanwhile, the next-generation long-wheelbase i3, underpinned by the dedicated Neue Klasse EV architecture, broke cover at the April 2026 Beijing Auto Show and is slated for an official market launch in 2027.
Design Language
The facelifted 2026 BMW i3 carries over the exterior styling of its predecessor without extensive sheet metal revisions. Up front, it retains BMW’s signature kidney grille with a blanked-off design to highlight its electric identity. Key dimensions stand at 4,872 mm in length, 1,846 mm in width, and 1,481 mm in height, riding on a generous 2,966 mm wheelbase. This near-3-metre wheelbase guarantees substantial cabin legroom across its 5-seater configuration. The lower- and mid-tier trims sit on 18-inch alloys (shod with 225/50 R18 front and 245/45 R18 rear tyres), while the flagship variant steps up to 19-inch wheels (wearing 225/45 R19 front and 245/40 R19 rear tyres). For the exterior palette, the 2026 update introduces new paint options, including Speed Blue and Brooklyn Grey.
Inside, the 2026 i3 retains the curved dual-screen cockpit, combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, complemented by a flat-bottom three-spoke steering wheel and a minimalist toggle-style gear selector. The infotainment system runs on the BMW Operating System 8.5, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor. Upholstery is trimmed in Sensatec synthetic leather.
Powertrain and Performance
The facelifted 2026 BMW i3 is exclusively driven by a rear-mounted single electric motor in a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout, offered in two output tunes:
eDrive35L (Standard Output): Delivers a maximum output of 210 kW (286 PS) and peak torque of 400 Nm. Paired with a 70.2 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, it achieves a CLTC pure electric range of 550 km. The century sprint from 0-100 km/h is completed in 6.2 seconds, with a capped top speed of 180 km/h.
eDrive40L Night Edition / Night Sport Edition (High Output): Pushes out 250 kW (340 PS) and peak torque of 430 Nm. Coupled with a larger 79.1 kWh ternary lithium battery, it provides a CLTC driving range of 625 km, dispatching the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.6 seconds.
DC fast charging is standard across the range.
Chassis and Handling Dynamics
The facelifted 2026 BMW i3 comes fitted with rear-axle air suspension as standard across all variants, featuring adaptive damping and ride-height adjustment. The chassis setup preserves BMW's trademark athletic handling and composed road manners. As an all-electric executive sedan, the i3 retains the driving engagement of the ICE 3 Series while benefiting from an underfloor battery layout that lowers the centre of gravity, further enhancing high-speed stability and cornering poise.
Cabin Appointments and Equipment
The 2026 facelift brings a substantial kit upgrade. Newly standard items across the range comprise a 360-degree surround-view camera, Parking Assistant Plus (incorporating Reversing Assistant), heated front seats, powered driver’s lumbar support, a hands-free powered tailgate, and in-car 5G connectivity. External camera hardware expands from 2 to 5 units, while ultrasonic parking sensors increase from 8 to 12. The mid-spec eDrive40L Night Edition gains a full-colour Head-Up Display (HUD), whereas the range-topping trim boasts a 17-speaker Harman Kardon premium surround sound system. The infotainment suite natively supports 5G connectivity, over-the-air (OTA) updates, wireless Apple CarPlay, and intelligent voice control.
Safety and Driver Assistance Systems
On the safety front, the 2026 BMW i3 is standard-equipped with comprehensive passive safety kit, including front dual airbags, front side airbags, and front-to-rear curtain airbags. For active safety and ADAS, the entry eDrive35L is equipped with essentials such as Lane Departure Warning, Front Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Lane Keeping Assist. The higher-spec eDrive40L Night Edition and Night Sport Edition gain the sophisticated Driving Assistant Professional and Parking Assistant Plus suites, offering advanced semi-autonomous driving capabilities.
Market Performance and Verdict
Since its market arrival in 2022, backed by the solid customer equity of the petrol 3 Series and substantial showroom discounts later in its life, the locally built BMW i3 recorded strong traction, with monthly deliveries once peaking near or above the 2,200-unit mark. The entry-level eDrive35L accounted for over 95% of total sales. In December 2025, domestic sales stood at 1,259 units. The 2026 facelift aims to sustain sales momentum via a high-value "more kit for less money" proposition. Nonetheless, in areas like smart cockpit features and high-level autonomous driving capabilities, the current i3 still trails behind newer Chinese EV rivals.
Notably, the current locally produced BMW i3 is nearing the end of its lifecycle, with final units slated to roll off the line in August 2026. In parallel, the next-generation long-wheelbase BMW i3, built on the purpose-designed Neue Klasse EV platform, has already staged its global premiere at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. The upcoming model stretches its wheelbase by 108 mm to 3,005 mm, features an 800V electrical architecture delivering a CLTC range of over 1,000 km, and can recoup 400 km of range in just 10 minutes of DC charging. Inside, it debuts the BMW Panoramic Vision iDrive cockpit with a 17.9-inch central display, ahead of its official showroom launch in 2027. Serving as a crucial transitional model in BMW’s electrification roadmap, the current i3 proved the brand’s ability to deliver a localized premium EV built to traditional luxury standards, paving the way for the next-generation i3 to spearhead BMW's next phase of electric mobility.
